Black Beans Recipe
Black beans are easy to make on the stove, but are fairly time consuming. To prepare black beans, use the following steps.
Prep time: overnight (10-14 hours)
Cook time: 1 to 3 hours
Ready in: 1 day
- 1 cup dried black beans
- Bowl of water, for soaking
- Pot of water, for cooking
- Salt to taste, around 2 to 3 teaspoons
- Soak the beans
- Simmer the beans
- Salt the beans
Pick through dried black beans and take out any shriveled beans. Pour the beans into a bowl and cover them with water. Let them sit overnight to soften. Soaking beans makes the cooking process much faster and more consistent.
Drain any remaining water from the soaked black beans. Pour the beans into a large cooking pot filled with water and turn on the stove to medium-high. When the beans start to boil, turn down the heat to low and let the beans simmer. To create softer beans, cover the pot with a lid. To cook firmer beans, cook them uncovered. Let the beans simmer for 1 to 3 hours.
When the beans start to get tender, add salt to the pot and stir. Let the beans cook until they reach the desired consistency.
When preparing beans to use in soups or stews, remove them from the stove when they are still slightly under-cooked. The liquid in the soup can cook them the rest of the way through.
