As of 2015, Stew Leonard's consists of four grocery stores located in Connecticut. It is family-owned company that prides itself on selecting and selling only fresh, quality items at a great value. While most grocery stores carry around 30,000 items, Stew Leonard's stocks around 2,000 select items. The stores specialize in dairy, meat, fish, produce, cheese and wine. The bakery, called Bethy's Bakery, provides customers with plenty of baked good options, including croissants, bread, bagels, cookies and donuts.
The history of Stew Leonard's began in the 1920s with Clover Farms Dairy, owned by Charles Leo Leonard. Clover Farms Dairy featured a pasteurizing and bottling plant and a delivery service that provided customers fresh milk every day. With milk delivery becoming less feasible, Stew Leonard, Charles's son, decided to make a change and opened the first Stew Leonard's store in 1969. The store's success is largely due to the company's focus on providing excellent customer service and taking care of its employees.
