Common foods that contain dairy include baked goods, margarine, deli meats and processed foods, such as prepared salad dressing and microwave meals. Mashed potatoes, some pasta dishes cheese, and cream or cheese-style sauces also frequently contain dairy products.
Foods sliced on a deli slicer, caramel candies, prepared chocolate and bread typically contain dairy products. Food vendors occasionally dip raw shellfish in milk, and steaks are prepared with butter in some restaurants. The presence of dairy is indicated by the inclusion of any milk protein, including casein, lactose or lactase. Reading product labels or asking the chef is the best method of determining whether dairy is present in food.
