Common dairy products include milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream. All types of milk-based cheese are considered part of the dairy group, including mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese and cottage cheese.
Low-fat dairy foods, including skim milk, low-fat cheeses and low-fat plain yogurt, are considered healthy choices. Dairy products made with whole milk, including most cheeses and ice cream, have high levels of saturated fat and should be consumed in moderation if at all.
Lactose-free versions of these foods, such as lactose-free milk and cheeses, are also considered dairy products. However, lactose-free dairy foods have been treated to make them safe for people with lactose intolerance to consume.
