A basic recipe for coleslaw calls for shredded cabbage and carrots coated in a creamy sauce made from mayonnaise, seasonings and vinegar. There are many coleslaw recipe variations.
To make basic coleslaw that feeds six people, shred 6 cups of cabbage and 1 carrot in a large bowl. In another bowl, mix together 2/3 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar. Also, add 1/2 teaspoon celery salt and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour the mayonnaise mixture over the shredded vegetables, tossing to coat the vegetables thoroughly. Refrigerate the coleslaw until it is time to serve.
