Coconut butter is made at home by processing dried coconut in a high-powered blender, such as a Vitamix, or food processor. Salt is added for flavor, and different seasonings can also be added for variety.
To make one small jar of coconut butter, start with 2 cups of dried coconut. Add the coconut to the food processor or blender, and mix it at a high speed. The sides of the container need to be scraped often so that all of the coconut is incorporated.
After approximately three minutes, the flakes begin to form clumps, and they continue to look more like a paste over the next five minutes of blending. From 11 to 15 minutes, the paste begins to get smoother and more spreadable, and it takes around 20 minutes to reach a smooth consistency that's similar to peanut butter.
Once the coconut butter is smooth, salt can be added to taste. Some users prefer to add salt just before serving. Flavored salts, such as vanilla salt, add additional flavor and variety to coconut butter.
Coconut butter is a solid at room temperature, so it can be softened in the microwave for approximately 10 to 15 seconds to return to a soft consistency.
