Blackberries grow outdoors and are exposed to many things that you don't want to put into your mouth or onto your table. They are very soft fruits and can be a challenge to clean, but with the use of a colander, kitchen water, a refrigerator and some paper towels, your berries will keep their shape while losing their dirty past.
Chill the berries
Ripe blackberries are extremely soft and fragile. When they are chilled, they firm up and can be handled more easily. Place the berries in a colander, and chill them in the refrigerator for an hour or longer prior to rinsing.
Rinse the berries
If your sink has a sprayer, use it to rinse the berries in the colander. If you don't have a sprayer, simply move the colander back and forth under the running tap to rinse the berries. Use gentle water pressure to avoid crushing the berries.
Drain the berries
After rinsing the blackberries, place the colander back into the refrigerator over a paper towel or recessed plate. You want the water to drain off, while allowing air to circulate around the berries. Water can promote mold growth when coupled with sugary berry juices. Draining the berries with good air circulation preserves the freshness of the blackberries.
