Chia seeds are a good source of fiber, protein, calcium, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. They are often purported to be useful in weight loss; however, there is little scientific basis for this claim. They are not recommended for people who are on blood thinners or medications for high blood pressure, nor for people with allergies, especially to sesame or mustard seeds.
They are recommended by some medical experts as an alternative to processed grains, notes WebMD. A twice-daily dose of 2 tablespoons, or 20 grams, is suggested. Chia seeds are richer in antioxidants than blueberries.
One potential drawback of chia seeds is blockage of the esophagus. Some people have suffered this effect after consuming chia seeds followed by water.
