Caramelize Eagle Brand condensed milk into a flavorful dulce de leche topping using a stovetop, oven, microwave or slow cooker. To avoid causing the can to explode, remove its contents or keep the can submerged in water while it cooks.
To make caramelized milk on the stovetop, pour 1 can of sweetened condensed milk into the top pan of a double-boiler. Set the milk over boiling water, and cook it for 40 to 50 minutes over low heat. Take it off the heat, and whisk it until the mixture is smooth.
Alternatively, pour a can of milk into a pie plate, cover it with foil, and place it into a larger shallow pan. Fill the outer pan with hot water, and bake the milk for 50 to 60 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. To use the microwave method, pour the milk into a microwave-safe bowl, and cook it at 50 percent power for four minutes, stirring once. Reduce the power to 30 percent, and cook the milk for another eight to 12 minutes, whisking it occasionally.
To make caramelized milk in the slow cooker, place the unopened can on its side in the bottom of the cooker. Pour enough water into the crock to submerge the can, and cook it for eight to 10 hours on low. Allow the can to cool completely before opening it.
