Cherry liquor or plum brandy can be substituted for kirsch. Kirsch is a cherry brandy. It is made in places like Germany and France, and the French version is sweeter.
Cherry syrup, including maraschino cherry syrup, can also be substituted for kirsch, especially in desserts. However, it may be sweeter than kirsch, so the cook should use it with caution. Some examples of cherry liquors that make good substitutes are Cherry Grand Mariner, Cherry Rocher, cherry schnapps and creme de cerise. Framboise, a raspberry alcohol, can also be used in place of kirsch in dishes as well as port wine.
