A major buyer of black walnuts is Hammons Products Company. It has almost 200 buying stations in Missouri alone and also has buying stations in 15 other states, including Tennessee and Kentucky.
The company, based in Stockman, Missouri, began buying walnuts in 1946 from people in the Ozarks during the fall harvesting season. The company states that it still follows this tradition of buying from people who gather black walnuts. Although about 65 percent of the walnuts the company buys come from Missouri, it buys from anyone willing to collect the nuts. Each year, Hammons pays a variable rate per 100 pounds of walnuts.
