The origins of SONIC Drive-In can be traced back to 1953. It was originally a small root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma owned by Troy Smith and partner Charles Pappe. It was first called Top Hat. The name changed to SONIC in 1959 after several more Top Hats had been opened. As of May 2015, there are over 3,500 SONIC locations in 44 states.
