You need your favorite cake mix and the ingredients listed on the box to make the cake (eggs, water and oil), a 2-quart oven-proof bowl, one can of chocolate frosting, one can of vanilla frosting, red and orange food coloring and chocolate cookies. You also need dry ice if you want to replicate an eruption.
Follow the recipe directions at the back of your box cake. Pour the batter into the oven-proof bowl, and bake until a metal skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Cool the cake, and invert it onto a serving tray. Using a serrated knife, cut the sides of the cake so it looks like a mountain. Frost the cake with the chocolate frosting, and wait for the frosting to harden. Cut a 1-inch-wide hole in the top of the cake.
Divide the vanilla frosting. Tint one half with the orange food coloring and the other with red food coloring. Microwave the frosting for a minute so it becomes runny. Spoon the red and yellow frosting from the top of the volcano cake so it forms lava paths. Crush the cookies using the back of a large spoon, and scatter them at the base of the cake to recreate dirt.
Put a piece of dry ice in a small plastic cup, and place the cup inside the hole you created at the top of the cake. Loosely cover the hole with cake crumbs and frosting. Pour a few drops of water into the cup to create a smoky effect.
