Each website lists the ingredient proportions slightly differently, but they all contain some amount of bourbon, vermouth, bitters and a maraschino cherry. Esquire recommends placing the cocktail glass in the freezer for half an hour prior to making a Manhattan. Add the vermouth, bourbon whiskey and bitters to a regular glass, crack ice cubes for maximum cold exposure, and add the ice to the alcohol. Esquire recommends stirring the drink a minimum of 50 times instead of shaking it to avoid a cloudy foam on the surface. Strain the drink into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a cherry.
