Mariano's Fresh Market is a chain of upscale supermarkets in Illinois. Founded in 2010, the chain was named for Chief Executive Officer Robert Mariano. The stores are frequently praised by customers for their excellent selection of local, organic and gluten-free products and for their amenities, which include a gelato bar, grilling station, oyster bar and a Zagat-rated cafe.
As of December 2015, Mariano's employees who work a minimum number of hours per week are eligible to receive health and welfare insurance benefits which include dental, vision, short- and long-term disability and life insurance. A health insurance spending account, tuition reimbursement program and staff discounts are also provided.
In November 2015, The Kroger Co. bought Roundy's Inc., Mariano's parent company. Kroger is one of the world's largest retailers, employing more than 422,000 associates who serve customers in more than 2,700 supermarkets and department stores in 35 states.
The companies have stated that the Mariano's name and management team will remain unchanged and that no staff layoffs are expected. Some new locations are also expected to open.
