Cabbage is a good source of important nutrients, including vitamin E, vitamin C, potassium and calcium. Two varieties of cabbage, bok choy and savoy, contain beta-carotene, the antioxidant that fights heart disease and cancer. The fiber in cabbage cleans the stomach and improves digestion and bowel movement.
Cabbage also contains indoles, the phytochemicals that are thought to play a role in the prevention of breast cancer. Cabbage provides many health benefits and only contains 24 calories per 3.5 ounces.
Consuming cabbage occasionally has minor side effects, including mild digestive distress caused by excess gas production. It is not recommended for people with thyroid problems because it sometimes interferes with iodine absorption.
