Some good butter cookie recipes include Land O'Lakes best ever butter cookies, King Arthur Flour's holiday butter cookies and Epicurious's basic butter cookies recipe. These recipes are all very similar, but some of them have a twist on the traditional recipe.
King Arthur's recipe is very standard cookie recipe except for the flavoring it calls for. The flavoring, called Fiori de Sicllia, is a combination of citrus and vanilla. The website does give options to flavor the cookies with more traditional flavors, such as vanilla or almond or even with stronger flavors like eggnog or rum.
The Land O'Lake's recipe predictably calls for the use of their brand of butter. If someone does not have this type of butter, then any kind of butter can be used. The frosting recipe that comes with the cookie recipe is also optional for cooks to use or not according to their tastes. This recipe calls for vanilla flavoring, but it could be changed out for which ever flavor someone prefers.
The Epicurious recipe gives numerous options for how to form the cookies. Outside of rolling the dough into a log and cutting sections from it after its chilled, they recommend rolling the dough into 1 1/4-inch balls and rolling it in nuts and sugar. This doesn't add any additional baking time to the original recipe.
