To make a basic 1-pound loaf of white bread in a bread machine, add 1 cup of room temperature water, 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter, 2 cups of bread flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of bread machine yeast to the machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer, and set the bread machine to the basic bread setting. Make raisin-nut bread by adding 1/4 cup raisins and 1/4 cup walnuts to this recipe.
To make a 1-pound loaf of honey wheat bread, place 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon of room temperature water, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter, 1 tablespoon of honey, 3/4 cup of bread flour, 1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour and 2 teaspoons of bread machine yeast into the bread machine pan. Set the bread machine to the whole wheat cycle. For best results, remove the loaf of bread from the pan as soon as possible after baking, and cool it on a wire rack.
Make an Italian herb bread by adding 3/4 of a teaspoon each of marjoram, thyme and basil to the basic white or honey wheat recipe. Make a garlic bread by adding 2 teaspoons of garlic powder and 1 tablespoon of dried parsley to either basic recipe.
