The bourbon biscuit was originally called the Creola, but the name was changed in honor of the French royal family, the House of Bourbon. By 1932, Creolas became known as bourbon biscuits, but the exact cause of this change, as of 2015, is unknown.
The name of the biscuits is often misleading, causing some to assume bourbon whiskey is used in the recipe. Bourbon biscuits are entirely free of whiskey and other alcohol. Each biscuit is composed of two rectangular chocolate biscuits sandwiching chocolate buttercream. They are less brittle than many biscuits and are generally sweeter as well. Bourbon biscuits were created in 1910 by Peek Frean & Co, the first mass producer of biscuits.
