This simple oil and vinegar dressing, from Allrecipes.com, takes about five minutes to make, requires only five ingredients and provides eight servings. It requires 1/2 cup of red wine vinegar, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, 1 clove of crushed garlic, 2 teaspoons of white sugar and 2 teaspoons of salt. To make the dressing, you combine all of these ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, shake the jar to mix the dressing, and pour the dressing over salad.
There are many variations on the basic vinaigrette, or oil and vinegar, dressing. For a tangier dressing, you can substitute balsamic vinegar. To make balsamic vinaigrette, combine 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 cup of white balsamic vinegar, 1 clove of crushed garlic, 1 teaspoon of ground mustard and one pinch of salt. Add ground black pepper to taste. You can either whisk the ingredients together in a small bowl, or shake them in a jar as in the first recipe.
For a zesty vinaigrette, with a little heat, add mustard and hot sauce. To make this dressing, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 2 teaspoons of minced garlic and 1 cup of vegetable oil. Then, mix in about 1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper, 2 teaspoons of salt and 4 drops of hot sauce, to taste.
