A basic cheese ball consists of soft cheese mixed with additional cheese, and the ball is rolled in a savory topping. Variations on the basic cheese ball recipe call for changing the cheeses or adding other ingredients.
To make a standard cheese ball, allow two packages of cream cheese to soften. Mix the cream cheese with 8 ounces of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce and 4 slices of crumbled bacon. Cover the mixture, and refrigerate it for one hour. Roll the mixture into a ball, and roll in 1 cup of chopped nuts.
An easy variation on this recipe calls for adding different cheeses. Replace half the cheddar cheese with 4 ounces of crumbled blue, gorgonzola or feta cheese. In addition to the Worcestershire sauce, add 1 finely chopped small onion. After forming the ball, roll it in 1/2 cup of chopped fresh parsley.
Another variation is the honey-Dijon cheese ball. This recipe calls for mixing just 8 ounces of cream cheese with 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1 cup of shredded cheddar. Add 2 tablespoons of grainy Dijon mustard and 1 tablespoon of honey, mixing well. Refrigerate for one hour, and then form the ball. Crush 2 cups of pretzels, and roll the ball in the mixture.
