A basic French toast recipe calls for the following ingredients: four eggs, 2/3 cup of milk, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, eight slices of bread, butter or vegetable oil, and maple syrup according to preference. Typically, bread that is two days old, or older, and slightly stale works best.
First, place the eggs, milk and cinnamon together in a medium-sized bowl. Mix these ingredients together with a whisk or fork, then pour the mixture into a large, shallow bowl. This bowl should be large enough to fit an entire slice of bread.
Meanwhile, heat the butter in a skillet using medium to medium high heat. While the butter is melting, place each slice of bread into the milk and egg mixture, and let each piece soak, coating each slice of bread thoroughly with the batter. After each piece is soaked, place it into the skillet, after the butter is completely melted.
Fry each piece of bread in the skillet until it is browned, then flip the slices over repeatedly until both sides are evenly cooked. Remove the slices of bread from the skillet and serve with butter and maple syrup, according to preference. Fresh berries or honey can then be added as an additional option.
