A basic focaccia bread recipe is made from flour, salt, sugar, active dry yeast, cheeses and spices. It takes about an hour to make the focaccia bread, including 25 minutes of prep work, 20 minutes for the dough to rest and 15 minutes to bake.
To make a basic focaccia bread, mix 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast and 1 pinch ground black pepper in a large bowl with 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme and 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil. Next, mix in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1 cup of water.
When the dough is mixed, knead it until it is smooth on a lightly floured surface. Oil a large bowl, and turn the dough ball around in the bowl to cover it in oil. Place a damp cloth over the bowl, and let the dough rise in a warm place for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
After 20 minutes, remove the cloth, and punch the dough ball down. Put the dough on a greased baking sheet, and use your fingers to pat it down into a 1/2 inch thick rectangle. Brush some olive oil across the top and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of Parmesan cheese and 1 cup of shredded mozzarella.
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
