To make the old-fashioned bread pudding, mix 2 slightly beaten eggs, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl. Stir in about 6 cups of soft bread cubes and 1/2 cup of raisins.
Heat 2 cups of milk and 1/4 cups of butter or margarine until the butter melts and the milk is hot, then add this mixture to the other ingredients in the bowl. Stir these ingredients before pouring them into an ungreased deep round baking pan. Bake the pudding for 40 to 45 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit in a preheated oven. After taking it out of the oven, insert a toothpick or knife into the pudding. If it appears clean once removed, the dish is done. Serve this dish warm with whipping cream.
Alternatively, you can opt for chocolate chips instead of raisins. Some other ingredients that can be substituted for raisins include dried cranberries, cherries or blueberries. You can also use nuts alongside the raisins. Cinnamon-raisin bread can be used instead of plain bread for a sweeter result.Learn more about Desserts
