To bake steak in the oven, place it on a pre-heated skillet or broiler pan and broil it in the oven for approximately 15 minutes. For extra tenderness and flavor, coat the steaks in oil and seasoning before broiling.
Cooking steak in the oven is a good way to get the flavor of grilled steak without grilling on an outdoor grill. To make steaks in the oven, use the following steps.
- Dry the steaks
- Preheat the oven and pan
- Add seasoning
- Put the steaks under the broiler
Pat down each steak with a paper towel to remove moisture from the surface. Moisture can keep the steak from searing properly.
Turn on the broiler on the oven. Place a cast iron skillet around 6 inches from the element or a broiler pan around 4 inches from the element. Let the pan pre-heat for up to 20 minutes.
Mix some canola oil with a liberal amount of salt and pepper in a bowl. Coat the steak with the oil. Alternately, rub the steak with salt, pepper and herbs.
Place the steaks on the unheated broiler pan. Place the steaks under the broiler and cook for approximately 15 minutes, turning the steaks over when half of the time is up. A 1-inch steak takes 15 minutes to become medium-done. Cook the steak longer for a well-done steak. For a rare steak, reduce the cooking time. Increase cooking times for thicker steaks and reduce them for thinner cuts.
