Bake brisket in the oven by putting it in a baking pan, pouring cooking liquid over it, covering it with foil and baking it for three hours at 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Turn the brisket once halfway through cooking. These cooking instructions are for a 3- to 3 1/2-pound brisket.
To bake brisket in the oven, you must first prepare a liquid to braise the brisket with so it does not get too dried out while cooking. This liquid consists of water, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, and either cider or white wine vinegar. Season this liquid mixture with chili powder, cayenne pepper, minced garlic and beef bouillon cubes.
Trim the fat off of your brisket with a sharp slicing knife before baking. Put the brisket in a 13-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan, and pour the cooking liquid over it. Normally, you do not need to brown a brisket before baking it. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil, and place in the oven. Bake for three hours, turning the brisket halfway through baking. When the brisket is ready, discard the cooking liquid, slice, and serve with barbecue sauce, if desired.
Briskets are typically sold in sizes of 3 to 3 1/2 pounds, although larger sizes are also available. A serving size of brisket is about 3 to 4 ounces per person, so most recipes yield plenty of leftovers.
