Some authentic Hungarian dishes include paprika chicken, goulash and langos. Other authentic foods are Hortobagyi meat pancakes, fried goose liver and stuffed cabbage. For dessert, Hungarians eat kurtoskalacs, or chimney cake, and Somloi sponge cake.
Paprika is a very popular spice in Hungary, and it goes into a stewed chicken dish with onions, garlic, tomatoes and sour cream. Served alongside this dish are nokedli, which are small egg dumplings. Goulash is a cross between a soup and a stew that consists of beef, carrots, onions and seasoned with paprika. This dish also comes with sour cream. Langos is a deep-fried flatbread with grated cheese, sour cream and garlic on top of it.
Hortobagyi meat pancakes are similar to French crepes and come topped with veal or chicken, along with sour cream and plenty of paprika. Fried goose liver is just as popular in Hungary as it is in France, while stuffed cabbage leaves contain pork seasoned with paprika.
Kurtoskalacs is a pastry wrapped around a cylinder that is baked on an open fire. It's coated in caramel and sugar, and then flavored with cinnamon and walnuts. Somloi sponge cake is a combination of vanilla, chocolate and walnut flavored cake topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and rum.
