As of 2015, advantame is an illegal sweetener in Europe. The European Food Safety Authority ordered scientific studies to decide whether to allow aspartame and steviol glycosides on the European market, and the results concluded that these two sweeteners are safe to use.
Even though EFSA's experts concluded that advantame is not carcinogenic nor genotoxic, this artificial sweetener is not legal in the EU as of 2015. Advantame is a synthetic sweetener derived from aspartame and isovanillin. The molecules are different than those of aspartame, and advnatame can be hundreds and thousands of times sweeter than sugar or other types of sweeteners.
