To make an appletini, combine 1 1/2 ounces of vodka, 1 1/2 ounces of sour apple schnapps and 1/2 ounce of sweet and sour mix. The recipe takes about two minutes to prepare.
Fill a martini glass with cold water and ice to chill it. Fill a cocktail shaker with the vodka, schnapps, sweet and sour mix and ice, and then mix the drink in the shaker for about 10 seconds. Pour the water and ice out of the martini glass, and strain the drink into the glass. Garnish it with an apple sliver.
The sweet and sour mix helps soften the taste of the alcohol, but the drink can be made without it. Gin can be used instead of vodka, for instance. Other recipes for the drink use apple juice, apple brandy or apple cider. A variation called the Rumpletini uses rum instead of vodka.
The appletini was invented in the 1990s, and has been mentioned on various television shows and movies, including "Two and a Half Men," "How I Met Your Mother," "Scrubs," "The Social Network" and "The Break Up." It is a variation of the martini. Other martini variations include the peach martini, chocolate martini and espresso martini.
