A great apple brown Betty recipe comes from Ree Drummond at the Food Network. To make this easy and delicious dessert, Granny Smith apples, hearty wheat bread, brown sugar and butter are layered and baked for about an hour.
Wash, peel, core and dice 3 Granny Smith apples. Other apples can be used if Granny Smith apples are not available. Dice 8 slices of hearty wheat bread and set out 1 1/2 cups of packed brown sugar and 1 1/2 to 2 sticks of butter (along with some additional butter to grease the pan). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place half of the bread into a well-greased 9 by 13 inch baking dish, followed by 1/2 of the apples, 1/2 the brown sugar and 1/2 of the butter. Repeat layers and spoon 1/2 cup of water over the top. Cover in foil and bake for about 45 minutes until the apples are tender. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until top is browned. Cool slightly and serve. This recipe makes 8 to 10 servings and has several positive reviews from home cooks who have tried it. Some suggest using pecans or oats on top for added crunch.
