Almond bark is a confectionery coating that mainly consists of vegetable fats, flavors and colors, while white chocolate is made up of cocoa butter, milk solids and sugar. Almond bark and white chocolate are not the same; however, almond bark can be used as a substitute for chocolate.
The United States Food and Drug Administration states that white chocolate must contain at least 20 percent cocoa fat, 3.5 percent milkfat and 14 percent total milk solids by weight. White chocolate can also contain various flavors or spices that are not similar in taste to chocolate, butter or milk, such as salt, dried malted cereal extract, ground coffee and ground whole nut meats. In addition, it can consist of other ingredients, such as emulsifying agents, antioxidants and whey.
Almond bark does not contain any real chocolate. It comes in many different flavors, with vanilla and chocolate being the most common. It is found in most confectionery stores or in the supermarket. Almond bark is often used as a dip for fruits and nuts. It melts easily in the microwave or on the stove. It is also sold in a wafer form, which can be purchased from a craft or cake supply store.
