Aldi was started by Anna Albrecht 1914 from a small store in Essen, Germany. By 1948, Albrecht's sons had taken over the business and expanded it to four locations. Aldi's original name was Albrecht Discount, but was shortened to Aldi in 1962. In 1976, Aldi made its American debut in southeastern Iowa.
