What Is the Typical American Family?

The "typical" American family is mother, father and two kids, as stated from the New York Times. This family also lives together under the same roof, known commonly as the nuclear family.

While the nuclear family is considered the typical American family, it is important to note that American families are as diverse as Americans are. The New York Times explains that some family structures becoming more common include the single-parent family, the blended family with a remarried couple and their kids from previous marriages and extended families with grandparents and other family members living along side the immediate family members. Additionally, single individuals and married couples without children are also more frequently considered a family.
