Should You Buy a Plastic or Wooden High Chair?

While some parents consider classic wooden highchairs more attractive, Consumer Reports notes that they are not generally as comfortable for the children sitting in them as plastic highchairs are. Unless a wooden highchair has modern safety features, Consumer Reports recommends avoiding it.

Safety features every highchair must have include a crotch post, a five-point safety-restraint system and wheels that lock (if the highchair has wheels). Highchairs must be able to stand up to spills and heavy use. Features that make highchairs especially convenient include adjustable chair height, adjustable trays, dishwasher-safe tray inserts and reclining seats. Removable trays allow highchairs to be pulled up to the dining table once the child is ready to start eating directly from the table.
