Barnardo studied medicine at the London Hospital and later built a name for himself as a philanthropist. He and his wife, Sara Louise Elmslie, opened and directed many homes for poor children, the first of which was opened in 1870 in London. The homes aimed to feed, clothe and educate homeless children. At the time of his death, he had opened 112 homes throughout the United Kingdom. Barnardo and his wife had seven children of their own.
