As of 2014, nursing caps and pins can be purchased from Kay’s Caps, which is headquartered in Valley Stream, N.Y., either online, by mail or by fax. The company offers iconic perma-starch caps, several stock-design caps and thousands of templates for custom caps in its catalog and on its website.
Nursing caps have been worn throughout the world since Florence Nightingale first wore them during the dawn of the profession. They were initially used to keep female nurses’ hair in place. By the late 1970s, they largely fell out of use in the United States, but as of 2014, they are still used in many graduation ceremonies. They are also used in countries where women still comprise the majority of the nursing profession.
