Free boot camps for teens include state-funded correctional facilities that teens are sentenced to by a judge. The National Guard also offers a free voluntary boot camp program for teens in some states. Other than being sentenced to boot camp in the juvenile justice system, few free boot camps exist.
Private boot camps, wilderness adventure challenges and military schools are generally expensive. The National Guard Challenge Academy, funded by the Department of Defense, is offered free in some states for troubled teens who are high school dropouts, habitual truants or gang members. At the boot camp, they learn discipline and life skills in a structured military-style environment.
