A variety of professionals in the nursing field write the articles in free online journals, including deans of nursing schools, nursing PhD holders and registered nurses. Journals such as The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing encourage writers and researchers to submit their work for consideration.
The American Nurses Association owns the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. Every issue starts with a selection of papers written by experts who the editors have invited to write on a particular topic. Then, other professionals, without invitation, are free to submit their own work on that topic. It is a peer-reviewed journal, which means every submitted paper is subject to scrutiny by other nursing experts before publication.
Journals such as Evidence-Based Nursing, which includes some free content, only accepts commissioned manuscripts. RCNi and BMJ own Evidence-Based Nursing and Dr. Alison Twycross of London South Bank University is the editor.
