The first sentence must grab the attention of the reader. Make sure to provide an interesting fact relating to the topic or a favorable quote. It is possible to add humor, especially when using an informal tone.
Supporting sentences are sentences that justify the claims made in the previous sentences. They prove that the writer is aware of the topic and is willing to provide additional information. For example, if the writer says George Washington was the first president of the United States, the supporting sentence provides additional details such as the date, month and year of his election into office.
Whether you are writing an essay or article, do not use the introduction to explain everything you want to discuss. This section is meant to entice people and make them want to read the rest of the article or essay to learn more about the topic.
