An evaluation paper is used to evaluate the quality of a product, business, program or place. Effectively writing an evaluation essay, sometimes also known as an investigative paper, requires clarity of standards, judgments and evidence.
- Establish criteria
Before making any judgments, create a preliminary list that includes all of the qualities you're looking for in order to give a good evaluation. This list should be clear and unbiased; at this point in the paper, you are setting personal judgment aside. Select criteria that are objective in nature in order to avoid giving your paper an opinionated feeling.
- Render judgment
In your judgment you should discuss whether the criteria are met. In essence, this portion of the paper covers the realities of what you are evaluating. Make sure that each criterion is addressed in your judgement. Giving each criteria a point value if met can help you clearly demonstrate what is most important and how well the organization, system or item is performing.
- Provide evidence
Your evidence should serve to prove the judgments you rendered earlier in the paper. Evidence is best given from an objective standpoint to avoid any biased sentiments. The evidence you cite should be conducive to the criteria being evaluated and able to be replicated.
