According to the ranking released by U.S. News and World Report toward the end of 2014, the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University were 149th and 156th on the list of top national universities, respectively. Additionally, Millsaps College was 89th on the list of top national liberal arts colleges.
Among the institutions in Mississippi included on the list of best regional colleges and universities in the South were Blue Mountain College in 23rd position, Mississippi College at 29th, William Carey University at 37th and Mississippi University for Women at 47th.
Overall, 10 of Mississippi's 15 four-year universities and colleges were included in either the national or regional lists of the best colleges in the United States. U.S. News & World Report defined national universities as schools that emphasize research and offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs. The publication defined regional colleges and universities as those that offer a full range of undergraduate programs and some master's programs but few doctoral programs.
