The top seven boys names on the list for 2014 were also on the list for 2013 and all retained their spots from the previous year. The popularity of Irish actors named Jack is credited for so many babies receiving the moniker. Traditional Irish names are also popular. Aoife, a traditional Irish name for girls is ranked sixth on the list. Liam ranks eighth for boys. The figures are based on the number of passport applications submitted to Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs each year.
In comparison, the name Emily only ranked ninth in the United States while Sophia, a variation of Sophie, Ireland's second most popular girls' name, topped the American list. Emma, Ireland's third most popular girls' name was ranked second in the United States. Although Jack specifically did not even crack the top 10 in the United States that same year, Jackson, for which Jack is a popular nickname, topped the list of American names for boys.Learn more about Education
