Teach children to tell time by directing them to imitate the hands of an analog clock with their arms. Make a clock out of cardboard and compare digital clock readings to the placement of the hands on the practice clock.
Give children a foundation to telling time by teaching them to count from one to 60 and by practicing skip counting by fives. Use a stopwatch, kitchen timer or alarm clock to time activities and discuss that certain events happen at certain times of the day. Have children plan their own schedules as a groundwork for understanding elapsed time and avoid using figurative expressions like "in a minute" and "in a second."
