The Iowa Writers’ Workshop is one of the oldest and most respected creative writing programs in the country. Founded in 1936, many of the program’s alumni rank among the most influential writers of their time, including Flannery O’Connor, T.C. Boyle, Denis Johnson and Joy Williams. The Writers’ Workshop is highly selective, admitting a small number of applicants out of hundreds each year.
Located in Manhattan, the Ivy League university Columbia takes full advantage of New York’s literary culture, offering students internship opportunities at prestigious literary publications and research assistantships to famous writers. Students at the school also participate in a wide range of literary and cultural events, including readings, conferences and workshops. The school counts some of the most respected modern writers among its faculty, including Richard Ford, Heidi Julavits, Orhan Pamuk and Dorothea Lasky.
Cornell is another of the most prestigious creative writing programs, enrolling just eight students each year. The program’s small size gives students unique opportunities for intimate workshops and personal critique sessions with experienced mentors.
