As of 2015, some top refrigeration schools are the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute; American Trainco; AVTEC; Bay State School of Technology; and College of Southern Nevada, according to HVAC Classes. The Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute offers training and certification for refrigeration technicians as well as classes in refrigeration transportation and recovery.
American Trainco offers seminars for refrigeration employees to supplement their knowledge, although there is an EPA 608 refrigeration technician certification available. The school also provides seminars in electrical, HVAC, plant management, and mechanical and industrial topics. The refrigeration program at AVTEC teaches students about technology through both classroom and hands-on experience. Certification requires more than 600 training hours over 87 training days. Students also need to complete 49 contact hours that focus on safety, resume writing, applied mathematics and interview training.
The Bay State School of Technology in Canton, Massachusetts offers a domestic refrigeration and air conditioning program that offers hands-on experience and teaches students how to install and repair refrigeration systems. Those who want to enter the program need to complete basic electricity and electronics course first. The Certificate of Achievement in Air Conditioning Technology from the College of Southern Nevada requires students to complete several courses including introduction to heating, venting and air conditioning electrical theory and application, residential gas heating, and commercial refrigeration I.
