These rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations.
In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked Rhode Island School of Design, Yale University, Maryland Institute College of Art and Carnegie Mellon University as the best American graphic design schools at the graduate level based on a survey of art school deans and other academics. Respondents rated over 200 Master of Fine Arts programs in art and design on a scale from 1 to 5.
Business Insider conducted its own survey of art directors and product designers in 2012, ranking Rhode Island School of Design, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati and Carnegie Mellon University as the best design schools in the nation. The majority of respondents identified skills and knowledge as the most valuable offerings at the top design schools.
