CBS Sports determines the top sports colleges with a formula for scoring that weighs football three times higher than other sports. Men's basketball gets twice as many points as the other sports that are part of the formula. Fan and media interest in the sport also factor into the score. CBS rates five sports: football, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball and a wild card sport for each school.
The top performing school in football was Florida State. Connecticut was the top in men's and women's basketball, and Vanderbilt was the best in baseball. The top university performance in a wild card sport was UCLA. The wild card sports for men are men's lacrosse, men's ice hockey, men's soccer and wrestling. Women's wild card sports include women's soccer and women's gymnastics.
Of the top 10 sports colleges, Stanford ranked the highest academically. As of 2015, it ranks fourth overall on the list of best colleges and universities compiled by U.S. News & World Report.
