An effective college English outline needs to have four main components: parallelism, coordination, subordination and division. The outline should be done after completing other prewriting exercises to help organize ideas in the paper.
Write all headings and subheadings in parallel structure. If a heading starts with a verb, all headings should begin with a verb.
Make the headings equal in importance and significance. Subheadings also need to be coordinated, and they should be less significant than the headings.
The headings contain the most general information, while subheading information is more specific.
Finally, each heading should be divided into two or more parts.
