A thematic unit is an educational plan in which all subjects in a curriculum are incorporated into a central theme, such as using the solar system for math problems, science experiments and reading assignments. Thematic units are based around student's grade level and based on real-world experiences.
Teachers typically use thematic units to keep students engaged by showing connections between subjects. Typically, all teachers of the same grade level design the thematic unit together and use the unit for one to nine weeks. Students are sometimes involved in designing the curriculum and help select activities that are often presented to the entire school.
