Text features are the parts of a book, story or article that are outside the main body of text. They include a book's table of contents, glossary and index as well as photos, illustrations, charts, diagrams and headings that are integrated into the text.
Text features make it easier to understand information presented in nonfiction works and add value to works of fiction. Titles, subtitles, headings and subheadings announce what type of information is coming up. A table of contents shows the organization of the book at a glance. Glossaries help the reader understand technical or foreign terms, and indexes allow users to find specific information quickly. Illustrations and photos along with related captions provide visual images that correlate with concepts presented in the text. Charts and diagrams add additional detailed information.
